Based on the philosophy of ORT, a global educational network driven by Jewish values for over a century, LAORT continues that tradition of empowering individuals to achieve their highest potential, thereby strengthening their families and communities.
Dr. Leon Bramson, who was said to “personify ORT”, played an early and critical role in establishing ORT throughout the world and its presence in the United States.
As a private non-profit institution, LAORT devotes not only its efforts but also its funds and resources to further its educational objectives. Its strength is its ability to quickly adjust to a constantly changing job market and the needs of its workforce. With its emphasis on extensive course offerings, flexible scheduling (online and in person), affordable costs, and most importantly the focus on “individual progress”, Los Angeles ORT College is meeting the challenges of the 21st century, today.
After 80 years of providing the LA metropolitan area with educational options to meet workforce needs, Los Angeles ORT College(LAORT) is today uniquely positioned to leverage that experience. Staying relevant – its building principal – translates today into concentrating on two critical areas – STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) for high school students, STEM Teacher Training and Professional development Courses for currently licensed high school science teachers, and IT Education for students of all ages.
History of ORT
Los Angeles ORT College (LAORT) proudly derives its name from a global organization, World ORT (WO) which was founded in Russia in 1880 to provide professional and vocational training to young Jews denied this education by the czar. The letters are an acronym from the Cyrillic words for vocational trades,
Over its 142-year history, WO expanded its programs worldwide – from Russia to Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Israel, South & Central America, India, Australia, North Africa, and to the United States. Through its International Cooperation (IC) program, WO partners with global organizations such as UNESCO on specialized programs on the African continent.
WO’s longevity relies on its core principle – to offer a skills-based education reflecting the fast-changing needs of the current marketplace in order to empower people and strengthen communities.
Today WO network reaches over 200,000 people a year in more than 30 countries, bringing high-level science and technology courses to students of all ages. It is one of the largest non-governmental training organizations in the world and is currently one of the largest educational charities.
As an innovator in the creation of curriculum and programs in the most sought-after educational fields, Los Angeles ORT College continues ORT’s tradition of meeting the challenges of tomorrow, today.
